Course Overview
This course is designed to equip psychiatrists with the necessary skills to screen, diagnose, and manage dementia, with a focus on behavioral symptoms and non-pharmacological treatments. Specialized sessions will help participants distinguish dementia from other psychiatric disorders, providing them with practical tools to apply in clinical settings.
Led by the NIMHANS Dementia ECHO team, this training offers interactive learning and expert guidance. By the end of the course, psychiatrists will have the confidence and expertise to manage dementia care, particularly in addressing behavioral and psychological symptoms, and applying non-pharmacological interventions.

Learning Objective

By the end of this course, participants will be able to:
- Screen for dementia effectively and conduct thorough evaluations of memory and cognitive function.
- Differentiate between types of dementia, including Alzheimer's and Vascular dementia, from other cognitive disorders.
- Manage dementia care through:
- Monitoring clinical status during follow-ups.
- Prescribing medications for dementia management.
- Assessing and managing associated mild to moderate behavioral symptoms.
- Diagnose and treat delirium in dementia patients.
- Make timely referrals to tertiary care and other specialists for advanced treatment.
- Implement prevention strategies for high-risk patients to reduce the incidence of dementia.
Course Curriculum
The course is structured into 4 modules over 16 sessions, designed to provide psychiatrists with a comprehensive understanding of dementia care. Each module builds on the previous one, combining theory, practical learning, case discussions, and role play to ensure hands-on competence, particularly in the areas of non-pharmacological management and differentiation of dementia from psychiatric illnesses.
Session Structure:
- Initial 3 sessions: Theory (Didactic lectures, Case vignettes, Role play)
- Subsequent 12 sessions: Theory combined with Practical Approaches, Case presentations by trainees, and discussions
- Final session: Clinical Revision
Modules Overview:
- Module 1: Understanding Cognitions, Their Assessment, and Evaluation of Dementia (3 sessions)
- Module 2:Dementia – Clinical Understanding and Differentiating from Psychiatric Illnesses (4 sessions)
- Module 3: Management of Dementia: Pharmacological and Non-pharmacological Aspects (5 sessions)
- Module 4: Medical Management of Dementia, Delirium, and Its Prevention (4 sessions including clinical revision session)
Evaluation of Participants’ Competence:
- Pre-assessment and post-assessment questionnaires
- Assessment after each module
- Questions incorporated in presentations
Learning Materials:
Participants will receive learning materials aligned with each module, ensuring that all resources are available to reinforce the content covered and aid in further understanding.

Who Should Enroll
This course is for Psychiatrists with MD/DNB in Psychiatry or DPM, who are involved in diagnosing and managing dementia, especially its behavioral symptoms, and distinguishing it from psychiatric disorders.
Course Duration
Live Weekly Sessions : 4 months (including 15 live sessions)
Self-Paced Sessions : 5 months (flexible schedule to complete at your own pace)

Course Fee:
Fee for the complete course: ₹11,800 (₹10,000 + 18% GST)
Certification
This training is certified by the NIMHANS Digital Academy (NDA). Upon successful completion of the course, participants will receive a certificate if they meet the following criteria:
For Live Weekly Sessions:
- Attendance: At least 13 out of 16 sessions, which can be a combination of live sessions and recorded sessions. However, attendance in recorded sessions should not exceed 3.
- Module Assessments: Complete and pass all module assessments.
- Clinical Data: Submit details of elderly patients seen on a 4-weekly basis.
- Case Presentation: Present at least one Dementia clinical case during live sessions or interact with an expert in case discussions.
For Self-Paced Sessions:
- Completion Certificate: Awarded upon completing all module-related assessments satisfactorily (with a minimum passing score of 75%), watching the pre-recorded lecture videos, and completing the embedded quizzes.
- Achievement Certificate: To earn the Achievement Certificate, you must present one clinical case related to dementia via an online case presentation
Course Requirements
For Live Weekly Sessions:
- Microsoft Teams: Required to join the live sessions and participate in interactive discussions.
- Moodle App: Not mandatory; course materials can also be accessed through a web browser. The Moodle app can be used for easier access to course materials, assignments, and progress tracking.
For Self-Paced Sessions:
- No additional app requirements: All course content is accessible through the course portal and can be accessed using a web browser. The Moodle app is optional for accessing materials and tracking progress.
Course Policies
- Non-Refundable Fee: The total course fee of ₹11,800 is non-refundable once paid.
- Course Access: Access to the course materials will only be granted upon full payment.
- Attendance:
- For Live Weekly Sessions: Participants are expected to attend at least 12 out of 15 live sessions.
- For Self-Paced Sessions:Participants must complete the course within 5 months and ensure they complete all modules and assessments on time.
- Certification: Participants must meet all criteria to receive certification, including completing required assessments and case presentations.
