Course Overview

Psychosocial care is a cornerstone of dementia care and plays an important role in improving the quality of life of persons with dementia and their caregivers. This course is designed to equip Health Professionals with the knowledge and practical skills required to provide psychosocial dementia care, with a focus on dementia assessment, person-centred behavioural management and caregiver support that can be applied in both clinical and community settings.

Conducted using the ECHO (Extension for Community Healthcare Outcomes) model by the NIMHANS Dementia ECHO team at the Geriatric Psychiatry Unit, Vayomanasa Sanjeevani and NIMHANS Digital Academy.

By the end of the training, participants will be better equipped to provide evidence-based psychosocial dementia care in their professional practice.

Learning Objectives

By the end of this course, participants will be able to:

  • Develop a foundational understanding of dementia and conduct screening and brief cognitive assessments.
  • Conduct comprehensive assessments across cognitive, functional, behavioural, and sensory domains.
  • Provide structured psychoeducation, address caregiver concerns, and manage family dynamics.
  • Implement non-pharmacological strategies for managing Behavioural and Psychological Symptoms of Dementia (BPSD).
  • Identify and address wandering and other safety risks.
  • Recognize the impact of medical comorbidities and adverse effects of medication and collaborate for integrated care.
  • Assess and address sensory health, mobility and fall prevention in dementia care.
  • Prevent, assess, and support the management of delirium in individuals with dementia.
  • Detect elder abuse and respond to legal and ethical issues in dementia care.
  • Utilize legal, community and institutional resources effectively.
  • Apply principles of palliative and end-of-life care in advanced dementia.
Course Curriculum

The course is structured as a progressive learning pathway consisting of two levels: Foundational and Advanced. Participants are required to complete the Foundational Level before progressing to the Advanced Level. Those who wish to further enhance their knowledge and competencies may subsequently undertake the Advanced Level. For comprehensive training, participants may also opt for the Combined Course, which includes both levels.

Foundational Level 16 Sessions · 4 Months

This level provides essential knowledge and practical skills in psychosocial dementia care through a structured training program. The Foundational Level consists of 5 modules delivered over 16 sessions.

  • Case presentations, where applicable and revision sessions.

Module 4: Social Aspects of Dementia Care

  • Session 10: Elder abuse and protection: Assessment and management
  • Session 11: Linking with community resources, conducting awareness programs and voluntary work

Module 5: Nursing Care in Dementia

5 sessions
  • Session 12: Assessment and management of Frailty and Falls
  • Session 13: Sensory health in dementia
  • Session 14: Nursing management of dementia: daily care, documentation, medications and recognition of red flags.

Advanced Level 7 Sessions · 2 Months

The Advanced Level is designed for healthcare professionals who have foundational knowledge of dementia care and wish to develop advanced competencies in comprehensive assessment, multidisciplinary management and person-centred psychosocial interventions. The course emphasizes the application of evidence-based approaches to complex clinical situations, interdisciplinary collaboration, ethical decision-making and the development of sustainable models of dementia care across different healthcare settings. The Advanced Level consists of 7 sessions.

  • Applied learning through complex case presentations
  • Interactive discussions with expert guidance
  • Final session: Advanced Revision

Who Should Enroll

Applicants must possess any one of the following qualifications:

  • Postgraduate Degree in Social Work (MSW or equivalent)
  • Postgraduate Degree in Psychology (M.A./M.Sc. in Psychology, Clinical Psychology, Counselling Psychology, Cognitive Psychology, or Applied Psychology)
  • M.Phil. in Clinical Psychology / Rehabilitation Psychology (RCI-recognized or equivalent RCI-approved courses)
  • B.Sc. Nursing or M.Sc. Psychiatric Nursing
  • MBBS or equivalent medical qualification recognized by the appropriate regulatory authority
Please note: Participants who have successfully completed the ECHO-based Training on Dementia Care for General Practitioners or Psychiatrists may skip the Foundational Level.

The duration of the course varies depending on the level of enrollment and the mode of delivery selected.

Foundational Level (16 Sessions)

Live Weekly 4 Months — 16 live sessions conducted once per week.

Self-Paced 4 Months — flexible schedule to complete at your own pace.

Advanced Level (7 Sessions)

Self-Paced Only 2 Months — flexible completion within the prescribed duration.

Combined Course (23 Sessions)

16 Foundational + 7 Advanced. Participants will:

  • Complete the Foundational Level (Live or Self-Paced, as chosen)
  • Progress thereafter to the Advanced Level (Self-Paced)

This training is certified by the NIMHANS Digital Academy (NDA). Upon successful completion, participants will receive a certificate if they meet the following criteria:

For Live Weekly Sessions
  • Attendance: At least 13 out of 16 sessions, which can be a combination of live and recorded sessions. However, attendance in recorded sessions should not exceed 3.
  • Module Assessments: Complete and pass all module assessments.
  • Clinical Engagement: Provide information (approximate numbers) about different clinical experiences with persons with dementia and challenges, if any, via a structured form.
  • Case Discussion (where applicable): Present a dementia-related case or share clinical experiences and challenges during expert-led interactive sessions, based on the participant’s professional role and practice setting.
For Self-Paced
  • Completion Certificate: Awarded upon completion of all module assessments within the prescribed duration and submission of required clinical engagement reports.
  • Achievement Certificate: To earn this, participants must present or discuss one dementia-related clinical or caregiving case through an online expert review session, based on their professional role and practice setting.

Can I switch from the live course to the self-paced course?
Yes. Participants enrolled in the Foundational Level may switch to the Self-Paced format if they are unable to continue attending the live sessions.
Do I need prior experience in dementia care?
No, our course is designed for both beginners and experienced healthcare professionals.
I don’t see patients with dementia directly, but my work requires knowledge about handling patients with dementia. Can I still join the course?
Yes, you can join the self-paced course to gain the necessary knowledge at your own pace.
Why should I choose live sessions over the self-paced course?

How is the self-paced course different from the live course?

Is there a time limit for completing the Self-Paced course?
Yes. Participants must complete their course within the prescribed duration of their enrolled level.
Can I enroll directly in the Advanced Level?
Health Professionals are required to complete the Foundational Level before progressing to the Advanced Level. MBBS graduates may enroll directly in the Advanced Level or choose to complete the Foundational Level before undertaking advanced training.
What is the Combined Course?
The Combined Course includes both the Foundational and Advanced Levels. Participants complete the Foundational Level first and then progress to the Advanced Level.
